Phillippa Yaa de Villiers has been chosen as this year’s Commonwealth poet.

She will be reading her poem “Courage”, written for the occasion, at Westminster Abbey in front of British royalty today for a Commonwealth Day event organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society.

Yaa de Villiers is a poet and performance artist and has published her work in two collections, Taller than Buildings and The Everyday Wife, the latter of which won the Poetry Award at the 2011 South African Literary Awards.

Yaa de Villiers expressed her excitement about being chosen, calling it “a kind of fantasy”.
