Graduated from Leningrad state university, historical faculty in 1963.
He is a doctor of historical science (1986), professor (1995), corresponding member of National science academy of Kazakhstan (1994).
Candidate, science worker, senior research associate of Institute of history, archeology, ethnography Science academy of Kazakh SSR (1963-1991). The director of archeology Institute of Science academy of Kazakhstan (since 1991).
Main direction of researches: archeology of Kazakhstan; urbanization of medieval Kazakhstan and Central Asia; cultural history of Kazakhstan; Great Silk way.
The participant of the international conferences in Almaty, Moscow, Tehran, Ankara, the People's Republic of China. Over 300 scientific works in Kazakhstan, Russia, Korea, France, the People's Republic of China, Pakistan, Italy are published.
