Sain Muratbekov was born in Konyr Kalpak village of Almaty region in 1935. His father was at the front when mother died, and the boy was brought up by the grandfather. After leaving school Muratbekov worked in state farm, started being published in regional newspapers, went with correspondent tasks around the republic and saw lots of things.
Graduated from Kazakh state university, nowadays KazNU named after Al-Farabi in 1963.
In 1959-96 – the literary employee of the “Коммунизм таңы” (nowadays “Жетісу”), editor-in-chief of the magazine “Жұлдыз”, newspaper “Қазақ әдебиеті” (1977-84), senior editor of a film studio “Kazakhfilm” consultant, director of Bureau of fiction promotion of Kazakhstan’s Union of writers, secretary of Board in Kazakhstan’s Union of writers, director of publishing house “Жазушы” (1984 - 91), editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Халық конгресі” (1992-96), one of heads of the movement “Nevada-Semipalatinsk”.
