Tokaev Kassym-Zhomart Kemelevich was born on May 17, 1953, Kazakh.

His father – Kemel Tokaev (1923-1986), talented Kazakh writer, was the member of Presidium of the Supreme Council of Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic, member of Kazakhstan’s Union of writers. His mother – Turar Shabarbaeva (1931-2000).

Kassym-Zhomart graduated from Moscow state institute of international relations, Pekin linguistic institute (China), Diplomatic Academy of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russian Federation. Specialist of international relations.

The doctor of political science. The thesis on a subject: “Foreign policy of Kazakhstan during formation of a new world order”.

He speaks Kazakh, Russian, English, Chinese and French fluently.

Diplomatic rank - the Plenipotentiary Ambassador.

He worked in central office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR, in foreign representations.

Since March, 1992 – deputy, first deputy foreign minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Since October, 1994 – Minister of foreign affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Since March, 1999 – Deputy Prime-minister, Minister of foreign affairs.

On October 12, 2000 Mazhilis approved K. Tokayev's candidacy for a post of the prime-minister of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

On October 28, 2002 he resigned from a post of the Prime-minister and on the next day held a post of the Minister of Foreign Affairs - the State secretary of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

From June, 2003 till January, 2007 – Minister of foreign affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

On January, 2007 appointed as a deputy of Senate.

From January 11, 2007 till April 14, 2011 – Chairman of Senate of Parliament of Kazakhstan.

On April 12 in headquarters of the UN in New York the former chairman of the Senate of Parliament of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokaev took the oath and became the new CEO of office of the UN in Geneva. He became the first representative of Asia on this post.

Owing to a post Tokaev will be the secretary general of conference of the UN on disarmament.

He was awarded with orders “Parasat”, “Қазақстан Республикасының Тұңғыш Президенті Нұрсұлтан Назарбаев” (“The first president of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbev”), “Содружество” (“Sodruzhestvo”) and four medals. He is the author of six books and numerous articles on problem of international relations, which were published in Kazakhstan and abroad.

On October, 2013 – appointed as a Speaker of Senate.
