The 1st of September, also known as Knowledge Day, is celebrated today across many CIS member countries and former Soviet republics: Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Russia, Turkmenistan, and Ukraine.
It symbolizes the start of another school year for schoolchildren and teachers at schools and students and professors at universities.
The first day of September also has a sweet tradition of the First Bell when a first grade girl rings the bell signalizing the beginning of the school year.
