Kazakh Soldier’s Wartime Diary Published in English

The book, titled A Teacher’s Voice from the Front: A Kazakh Soldier’s War Diary, 1941–1945, is based on an authentic diary written by Mukhtarov during his years at the front.

Kaiyrzhan Mukhtarov was born in 1914. He lost his mother at an early age and spent much of his childhood herding livestock. He first attended school at the age of 14, but soon became one of its best students. He later studied at a teachers’ institute in Aktobe and chose education as his profession. Before the war, he worked as a mathematics teacher.

Mukhtarov experienced the beginning of the German invasion of the Soviet Union near Minsk on June 22, 1941. From the first days of the war, he began recording what was happening around him.

His diary describes the war not from the perspective of a commander or historian, but through the eyes of an ordinary soldier. Retreats, encirclements, hunger, exhausting marches, the loss of comrades and the constant struggle to survive appear throughout his wartime notes.

Over four years, his journey took him through Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Hungary and Austria. Mukhtarov survived the war and returned home. For his service, he was awarded the Order of Glory, 3rd Class, as well as the Medal “For Courage” and the Medal “For Battle Merit.”

After returning to Kazakhstan, Mukhtarov resumed the profession he had left behind because of the war. He spent many years teaching mathematics and educating generations of students.

What makes the diary particularly valuable is that it was not reconstructed from memory decades later. The entries were written as the events unfolded. There is little attempt to romanticize war or turn everyday experience into a heroic narrative. Instead, the diary preserves the immediate thoughts, fears, hopes and observations of a man living through the conflict.

The manuscript remained in the family archive for many years. Today, the original wartime diary is preserved at the National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Astana.

The English edition includes the full diary along with historical notes that provide context for certain events and locations. It also contains wartime and postwar photographs, information about Mukhtarov’s route across Europe, and images of pages from the original handwritten manuscript.

The publication brings an important and rarely represented perspective to English-language readers: World War II as experienced by an ordinary Kazakh soldier who lived through the conflict from its first days in 1941 until the final year of the war in 1945.
